A Drive out in the Toyota Supra

I’ve been fortunate to experience a range of exotic and interesting cars over the years, but the legendary Toyota Supra is a car that’s always seemed to elude me. Out of the blue, yesterday presented the opportunity to be a passenger in a friend’s supra and get some quick photos.

I’ve photographed into the cabin of a Supra once at a car show but it was only until I got in the car that I realized just how driver-focused the interior is. Similar to my S2000, all switches and displays are angled perfectly and are always within reach of the steering wheel.

The performance of the Toyota Supra is something I’ve always been somewhat curious about, and after this weekend, I now fully understand the hype. Acceleration in a twin-turbo Supra is unlike any other car I’ve been in, and that’s including a whole range of supercars. By no means is it the fastest car in the world, but opening the throttle pins you back into your seat and has you laughing like a lunatic at the mixture of turbo noises and straight-six growl.

It’s a car that somehow manages to hold a dominant road presence, even though the majority of road users aren’t likely to know anything about the iconic tourer. Pedestrians break their neck trying to catch a glimpse of the Supra, other cars follow closely to be part of the crew, and eyes open wide when it flies past. I’d like to thank my friend Aidan for taking me out in the car and leaving me wondering how on earth I can find the 25K needed to buy one.
