Starting youtube was one of the best things I’ve done

I’ve flirted with YouTube and video creation for over a decade now, first starting with gaming, Esports and vlogging content. In fact, I’ve probably started, maintained and then abandoned about 20 different channels. I recall enjoying them all in the process, but I swiftly gave up when I didn’t see the unrealistic results I came to expect. I foolishly did the same with The Drivers Den, my automotive channel, only to find that over the years I’d left it dormant, the numbers had begun to creep up.

As soon as I saw one of my old videos with 33 thousand views, I felt like an absolute donut for giving up too soon. At that same trajectory if I’d have uploaded regularly, there’s a strong chance I’d have achieved the goals I’d so foolishly expected previously and I may have even shifted across to full-time content creation as my main focus. In hindsight I’ve learnt the rather obvious lessons of not to expect results so soon, be patient where required and to trust the process.

After wallowing in pity for a short while, I knew what needed to be done. I had to fire up the forge again, use the cars I own and have access to to my advantage and essentially; stop being a numpty. At the time of writing this, I’ve produced 4 videos in 3 months, amassing a total of 10 thousand views and gaining around 200 additional subscribers. My comments sections are packed with praise, feedback and comparison to the content creators I look up to. Hell, I’m reading the following comment as we speak, and blushing like a 9 year old;

”I beg, please, you would make for an amazing impressionist for James May from Top Gear/Grand Tour”

Cool right?

The best thing is, I know I should be doing better. If I produce one video per week to the current standard, there’s rough potential for say, 20k views and 200+ subscribers each month. Carry that on for a full year, and I’m well on my way to achieving the goals I had back when I was 12 making Call of Duty videos on my mum’s laptop.

So that’s where I’m currently at; proud of my results, grateful for all the unexpected support and motivated to actually stick to it this time. Oh, and YouTube’s shift in promoting smaller content creators may have helped.

Take it easy,
Jason
